A modern skyscraper, the First City National Bank in Houston, Texas, by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (1961), is reprogrammed and subjected to skin replacement. The result is a spatialized blur. Skins within skins are interwoven and collapsed together. Equal quantities of residential and commercial space are mixed. Transparency, iridescence, opacity, reflection, and translucence intensify, multiply, and interfere with programmed spatial relations in a flux of surface effects. Cut adrift from its urban moorings, the building is a precisely delimited spatial sample that can be multiplied and arranged in any pattern desired—a pixel.
