CULTURE / INDUSTRY
Competition entry for a performing arts center
Martin / Baxi Architects

CULTURE / INDUSTRY is an invited competition entry for a performing arts center in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The project collects the disparate program elements together under a single, undulating wrapper: a perforated shed. Local history is remembered by preserving the main interior space of a former hosiery mill under the shed. At the other end of the site is a 2500-seat multipurpose theater. Between these are offices, classrooms, public spaces, café, an art center, and a black box theater, joined together by a lobby that stretches across the site and becomes a terrace in front of the main theater. The matte-black metal shed and its white contents rest on a multicolor carpet that transforms into seats as it enters the main theater, with each seat a different color. Outside, a white gravel landscape is punctuated by multicolor craters and mounds to accommodate seating, play, and an amphitheater. The carpet also acts as a graphic interface for a web-based environment.
