Exhibition: GENERATIVE DISRUPTION

This map of the United States displays the current state of abortion rights following the supreme court’s 2022 decision to overturn the constitutional right decided by the 1973 court case Roe v. Wade. Hanging in front of the states with restrictions on abortion are regionally specific dried plants and herbs, which have historically been used for contraception and/or to induce miscarriage. One such example is Queen Anne’s lace, which forms the backdrop of the map and can be found in every state in the country. The title of the work refers to the trigger laws that some states drafted in advance of the 2022 ruling to take immediate effect if the right to abortion was overturned. By combining the plants with the map, the artists demonstrate how important the struggle for bodily autonomy was in the past and continues to be today for women. (Gallery Guide Text)
